MEC Shongwe warns motorists to be cautious during the oncoming busy weekend

08 August 2013

As part of the birthday celebrations of one of Nelspruit’s most prominent businessman, Robert Gumede, which would  include among others performance by two international stars at Nelspruit’s Rugby Stadium on Saturday, 10 August 2013 motorists are encouraged to drive carefully as traffic volume is expected to increase.

The city will also host MTN Quarterfinal match between Orlando Pirates and Supersport United on Sunday, 11 August 2013.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has called on motorists to remain vigilant and obey road rules to avoid finding themselves on the wrong side of the law.

The MEC said road officers will show no mercy to those who will be found violating traffic rules, driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding excessively.

He added that it is necessary that motorists work hand in hand with the officers to ensure that our roads remain safe and such big events become an overwhelming success, because they do not only boost the provinces economy but also showcase to the world that our people are great hosts.

He said that traffic officers will be patrolling in all corners of the city to deal with those who will disobey traffic rules or embarking on any mischief.

“People must enjoy responsibly and not forget to adhere to traffic rules. We are also appealing to members of the public to report any bad driving to the authorities so that unnecessary accidents are avoided this coming weekend,” said the MEC.

He has also called on those who will be travelling long distances to ensure that they vehicles are roadworthy and regular stops are taken as fatigue has contributed to some of our most fatal accidents that usually characterises with long weekends.

Shongwe also added that police will be on the lookout for those who will take advantage of these events to commit crime.
