MEC Shongwe condemns killing of Belfast couple

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has condemned the killing of an elderly couple Rudolph and Elna Van Heerden.

Police reported that their bodies were found inside a deep freezer at their Belfast home with their hands and feet tied with cables.

Early in December 2012, Joshua Maseko who was Dipaliseng Acting Municipal Manager together with Nelisiwe Mzamo were also found dead near a park in Standerton.

In another incident, a 76 year old woman, Beds Gouws was also found dead at Waltevrede farm in Belfast.

MEC Shongwe sends condolences to the families of the victims saying community members must assist the police with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.

“Such gruesome killings are condemned and the perpetrators must serve their entire lives behind bars as they are dangerous towards our communities,” said Shongwe.

He also called on the police to work hard and make a swift arrest as the suspects pose danger to the community.
The MEC together with the SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Mr Thulani Ntobela will on Monday, 14 January 2013 visit the Van Heerden family to send their condolences.
