Shongwe commends Mpumalanga police for pursuance of dangerous suspects

11 April 2012

Mpumalanga Community Safety Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has commended SAPS in the province for pursuing two dangerous suspects who were collectively wanted for series of crimes that includes house and business robberies, murder, rape, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, attempted murder armed and house robberies.

The first suspect, Matthew Khundula (30), reportedly opened fire when the police were trying to apprehend him in Pienaar on Monday, 9 April 2012. He died later in the hospital from injuries he sustained in the shootout. While the second suspect, Bheki Magagula (28), died on Saturday, 7 April 2012 following a shootout out that ensued between him and the police.

Shongwe says although both suspects were gunned down following a shoot out with the police, what should be commended is police’s resolute to pursue the two suspects with a view of arresting them in order to bring them to book.

He says for the fact that shoot out incidences ensued as police were trying to apprehend them demonstrates how dangerous the two suspects were to the communities out there.

Shongwe said, ”we salute your bravery as you placed your own lives on the line in order to protect the communities. Your actions constitute essence of what good policing is all about.

Criminals must be warned and we believe that your actions have sent messages to other criminals that are terrorizing our communities that their days are numbered and they will also be brought to book.”

The MEC has also called on the communities to assist the police in the fight against crime by providing with any information that may lead to arrest and convictions of crime suspects.
