12 August 2013
Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe
sends condolences to the families of nine people who died on three separate
accidents in the province over the weekend.
The first accident happened on 09 August 2013 [Friday] at 22:30
between Badplaas and Carolina near Buffalo Valley Farm when a Renault sedan
lost control and left the driver and two passengers dead. One seriously
injured passenger was rushed to hospital.
On Saturday [10 August 2013] at 14:45, another accident left two drivers and a passenger dead and two passengers seriously injured after two sedans collided head on at Zakheni Bridge between KwaMhlanga and Moloto on the R573 Road.
Yesterday [11 August 2013] afternoon, a Toyota Quantum which was travelling from the direction of Standerton to Morgenzon lost control near Joubert Vlei Farm after a tyre burst and left three passengers dead while 12 others, including the driver were rushed to Standerton Hospital with serious injuries.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
MEC Shongwe says that the province is concerned about the number of fatal accidents that continue to happen on weekends.
“We continue to strengthen law enforcement and education on our roads however; we can never win the battle of curbing the scourge of road accidents if road users are still ignoring and violating traffic rules,” says Shongwe.
He adds that prosecution of road offenders can send a strong message to other offenders and it may put an end to the scourge.
