MEC Shongwe to lead Schools Prison Visits
13 February 2012
As part of enhancing learners’ awareness about crime prevention,
Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe will lead
secondary school learners to Barberton Prison tomorrow at 08h30.
The purpose of the tour is to enable learners to experience first hand how prison is like so that they do not become tempted to do crime themselves in the future and it is part of the School Safety Programme of the department.
Learners from around Ehlanzeni and the schools were identified in
collaboration with the Department of Education.
The department has been hosting the tours to various prisons
demonstrating to learners and their educators, with the help of offenders, that
crime doesn’t pay.
During the visits learners are encouraged not to glamourise criminals
and rather focus on their education which would yield good future for them.
This programme does not make offenders look like heroes, nor does it
glamorize prison. It instead assists to dispel myths that prison is a good place
but a place to punish those who break the law.
The visit to Barberton Prison will take place as follows:
- Date: Tuesday, 14 February 2012
- Time: 08h30
- Venue: Barberton Correctional Facilities
The media is invited.
