MEC Shongwe adopts Msogwaba Primary School

13 April 2012

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Vusi Shongwe has adopted Msogwaba Primary school in Pienaar near Nelspruit in order to provide assistance to the school.

Shongwe adopted the school during one of the road safety programmes of monitoring the functionality of scholar patrols in the province..

The visit to the school started on 12 April 2012 where the learners of the school were educated on road safety and the scholar patrol team awarded with certificates.

On 13 April 2012, MEC Shongwe with representatives from the department visited the school again, where the MEC assisted learners to cross the road at the pedestrian crossing.

In his address, the MEC said it was important for every sector to  assist schools because that is where the future of the country lies.

“That is why it is important to adopt schools to provide with assistance on their needs and to ensure that safety is instilled in them at an earlier age.
“These pupils are our future and we should make them road safety ambassadors as young as they are if we want to have safer communities with no crime and road accidents,” said the MEC.

The scholar patrol programme that has been there for a long time operates in 253 schools in the whole province and it assists learners to cross roads to and from school on busy roads. The programme is being supported by the department by paying for insurance for each and every learner as well as the supervisors in case when they are injured while patrolling.

The department also provides with uniforms and other resources used for scholar patrols in the province.

The department will soon visit schools in Nkangala and Gert Sibande Region.
