MEC Shongwe applauds police for swift arrest on Belfast murder case

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has applauded the police for the speed arrest of two suspects involved in the murder case of Rudolph and Elna Van Heerden in Belfast.

Police reported last week that their bodies were found inside a deep freezer at their Belfast home with their hands and feet tied with cables.

Today [14 January 2012], MEC Shongwe accompanied by the Mpumalanga SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Mr Thulani Ntobela, the Executive Mayor of Emakhazeni, Cllr Hamza Ngwenya visited the Van Heerden family.

The Van Heerden family warmly welcomed the MEC and his entourage and expressed confidence towards the police and that the case will be speedily finalized and suspects be convicted.

Police reported that two of the three suspects have been arrested of which one of them was arrested in Lydenburg with a watch belonging to one of the deceased. The third suspect is still on the run.

“The police must continue to work around the clock to ensure that the third suspect is also brought to book,” said Shongwe.

He called on the National Prosecuting Authority to ensure that the suspects are speedily prosecuted and that no bail is granted to them.

He also called on the general public to be involved in crime prevention initiatives and also provide information to police that could lead to arrests of crime suspects.
