Shongwe not disappointed with the postponement of speedster’s case

15 March 2012

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe said he was not disappointed at the postponement of a 204 km/h speedster and a Free State Stars soccer player, Manti Moholo’s case to 11 May 2012 due to his counsel’s request to have more time to look at the information from the state.

Shongwe said although the case was not finalized, the court process must be allowed to run. Moholo’s counsel had all the information regarding the case only today hence the hearing of the case was postponed.

Moholo, who was appearing for the third time today, was caught while driving on N3 near Balfour on 7 February 2012.

MEC Shongwe was happy that the two other speedsters, Hoosain Shaheed Muhamed and Mike Tsakane Mohlaolwa pleaded guilty to charges of negligent and reckless driving.

Muhamed was fined R3500 or 30 days imprisonment. The other two R2000 was suspended for five years.

Mohlaolwa was fined R5000 or six month’s imprisonment and R2000 of the fine was payable immediately while the other R3000 was also suspended for five years.

The other speeding case a Chinese man, Zifa Wang was postponed as he needed a Chinese Language interpreter. Wang was also with reckless and negligent driving after caught driving 196 km/h on N3 near Balfour,

The fifth person did not come to court and therefore a warrant of arrest been issued against the person.

MEC said “although their driving licenses were not withdrawn, we believe sentences meted out against them would send messages to other reckless drivers that the government will do whatever it takes to ensure that our roads are safe.”
