MEC Mahlangu congratulates the South African Police Service (SAPS) for quicker arrest of the alleged murders of the owners of a Sabie guesthouse

17 November 2009

Mpumalanga MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Mr Jabu Mahlangu, has congratulated the SAPS for their professional and quick arrests of the alleged heartless murderers of the late Mr Leon and Ms Hetta Steyn, the owners of The Artist Café in Sabie.

The couple was shot dead on 29 October 2009. The MEC’s statement follows his condemnation of the murder of the couple, in which he urged the police to leave no stone unturned to hunt and bring the killers to book.

“I am thrilled about the outcome and take this time to congratulate our men and women in blue for their professionalism and dedication towards hunting these ruthless killers. I hope they will be dealt with accordingly and wish they should receive the harshest sentence ever, even a life sentence would be appropriate. No one has a right to take the life of another,” said MEC Mahlangu.

MEC Mahlangu added that he hopes the arrest will send a strong message to criminals that “you can run but you cannot hide”.

“We are happy that the arrest will boost our standing in the eyes of the outside world that we are capable to deal with such rogue elements within our communities. It will boost confidence in us in light of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, as prospective tourists will feel that they are safe in our hands,” concluded MEC Mahlangu.
