Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Business community joins the fight against crime

17 November 2011

The business community of Mpumalanga has pledged to assist the department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison and SAPS in the fight against crime.

Nelspruit Protea Tyres and Buscor told MEC Vusi Shongwe in a hand over ceremony of motor bikes that they also have a major role to play in the fight against crime as they are also victims of crime.

The two companies today [17 November 2011] have donated five motorbikes to the department. The motor bikes were subsequently handed over to SAPS in order to assist the police to access places where vehicles cannot reach.

SAPS Tactical Response Team (TRT) members were also awarded certificates by the MEC in recognition of their contribution to reducing crime in the province.

Representatives from both donors said that they are aware of the high crime rate and accidents and it is their wish to assist government in reducing crime and road carnages.

Speaking at the same Provincial Community Police Forum Chairperson Mr. Kevin Pillay said that there is a need to encourage more business people to come forward and support crime fighting initiatives.

“Crime is a social problem; it is not a responsibility of the police only to fight crime, everyone must be involved to make sure that our communities are safe,” said Pillay.

Meanwhile, MEC Vusi Shongwe thanked Buscor and Protea Tyres saying that it shows that the police are working hard.

He said that the police are now left with a challenge to make sure that the standard that the province is in terms of safety should be maintained so that the police can be fully supported by the business community.

“We must work hard to make sure that we attract more business people to come and invest in our province, investors cannot invest in a province that is not perceived as safe,” said Shongwe.

He added that this festive season, his department together with the police will make sure that the people of Mpumalanga are safe and motorists who disobey the rules of road face the law.
