New Schoemansdal police station boss wants to reduce gender-based crime

18 April 2011

Newly appointed Schoemansdal Police Station Commissioner Lt. Colonel Marry-Jane Mazibuko says her immediate priority is to strengthen the relationship between the community and police.

Schoemansdal is in the south-west of the rural Nkomazi Municipality bordering Swaziland.

Speaking during a gender-based violence campaign in Driekopies which is under her police precinct on Saturday, Lt Colonel Mazibuko said taking the police station to the people will bring integrity for the police.

She embarked on a door-to-door campaign organized by Mpumalanga Safety, Security and Liaison Department where she encouraged communities in the area to contact her police station if engulfed by crime.

She was joined by the MEC Excellence Award Winner for best police station Colonel Dorah Xaba who was transferred to Elukwatini Police Station recently.

During the campaign, Lt Colonel Mazibuko said she was aware that issues of domestic violence and rape were rife in the municipal area which was a serious concern for the police station.

She said it was unfortunate that women were still “withdrawing cases” and protecting the perpetrators of such crime.

Part of her plans is to strengthen and maintain the local community police forum which in the past had assisted the police station in the fight against crime.

She added that her open door policy would assist in ensuring that her officers were always on the right side of the law.

“Our communities have to put their faith in us, and that means we as police must always protect them and treat them with honesty.
“I will always make sure that we maintain the standard that my former colleague left and if there is space for improvement, then we will improve” said Mazibuko.

The purpose of the campaign was to encourage interaction between the police station and the communities residing nearby. More campaigns of this nature are in a pipeline.
