Shongwe wants a crime-free Easter holidays in Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has called for
a crime-free Easter Holidays in the province saying citizens and visitors should
enjoy responsibly.
He said communities needed to play their role in ensuring that they
stayed out of trouble as the police would be deployed all over the province to
ensure public safety and security.
He said he was aware that Mozambican and Swaziland nationals would be
returning to their countries of origin for holidays and urged them not to
do criminal activities en route to their countries.
He said security would be intensified in all the international borders
separating the province and the two countries.
“We want to drastically reduce crime before and after the Easter season. Communities must behave accordingly, otherwise they will spend their Easter holidays in prison,” said MEC Shongwe.
He said the police’s visibility would be enhanced during this time of
the year in line with increased amount of movement between the neighbouring
countries.
Shongwe explained that police will conduct road blocks at all strategic
places, do stop and search operations to intensify security while SAPS flying
Squad monitors crime on both national and provincial roads.
He said contact crimes such as murder, attempted murder, assault with
grievous bodily harm, common assault tended to rise due to increased consumption
of alcohol.
