Standerton accident claims six lives

19 August 2013

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Vusi Shongwe is deeply saddened and shocked by the increasing number of accidents in the province especially on weekends following an accident that claimed six lives in Standerton.

The accident happened on Sunday, 18 August 2013 around 16h45 when a Volkswagen Sedan collided head on with a Nissan Sedan on R23 Road between Standerton and Perdekop near Kromdraai Farm. Of the six people who died four occupants were from the Nissan Sedan while two occupants were from the Volkswagen Sedan.

The deceased includes drivers of both vehicles.  It is believed that the accident happened when one of the two drivers attempted to overtake on a barrier line. The police are investigating.

Shongwe has sent called on motorists to exercise due and diligence while driving. He says most accidents seem to take place at night and on weekends and therefore motorists need to exercise great care when driving during those times. Motorists also need to obey the rules of the road whether law enforcement agencies are there or not.

He said that traffic officers cannot be on every part of the road and that drivers must assist government to reduce accidents by also prioritizing their own lives and that of other road users.

“We need to work together to ensure that our roads are not turned into death traps by ensuring that we all drive responsibly. Let us clamp down on road accidents in order to avoid unnecessary loss of lives on our roads,” Shongwe said.
