Mpumalanga Safety enhances systems to curb speeding

19 August 2013

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has technologically enhanced its systems to curb speeding, lawlessness and road accidents in the province.

As speed has been identified as one of the major contributors to road accidents, automated speed cameras will be mounted by traffic officers at identified strategic spots to measure speed throughout the province. The information captured by the cameras will be downloaded and used to issue summons to those who will be caught driving above the speed limit.

The department contracted Medaco Consortium to supply all the software and other related equipment to be used by traffic officers. Automatic Number Plate Recognition software has been fitted on enforcement vehicles, which will be patrolling on the provincial roads. This will assist in tracking motorists with outstanding summonses for prosecution purposes.

These activities of the department will be guided by Operations Slow Down which will be enhanced building up to Transport Month and the Festive Season of 2013/2014.

According to Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Mr Vusi Shongwe, the department is serious about reducing accidents that are as a result of human error and this is one of the strategies that will be used by the department to enhance road safety.

Traffic officers will continue to concentrate on monitoring traffic, ensuring vehicle fitness and conducting roadblocks, among others.

The ultimate objective of the department is to ensure that roads are safe for every driver and pedestrian in the province
