48 drivers arrested in one weekend

19 December 2012

At least 48 drivers were arrested by the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison traffic officers for different violations in one weekend.

As part of the festive season plan, roadblocks and rest stops were staged in different routes between 14 and 17 December 2012.

22 drivers were arrested for drunk driving, 17 for excessive speeding and others for reckless and negligence, driving without driver’s licence and driving with false documents.

2539 summonses were issued for different violations, 159 notices for discontinuing were issued and 27 vehicles were impounded.

MEC Vusi Shongwe praises the traffic officers saying that these operations will be the order of the day and will continue to be intensified throughout the festive season to ensure a road accident free Mpumalanga.

He calls for community members not to turn a blind eye when they experience reckless driving, but to report it to law enforcers.

“We need to work harder to eliminate the scourge of road carnage in order to restore communities’ faith in law enforcement agencies. We cannot succeed on our own; we need communities to work with us by among others reporting bad drivers and spread road safety messages.

“Drivers must be warned as we will be tough on our roads to ensure that there is a reduction of accidents in the province,” said Shongwe
