20 February 2013

At least 306 vehicles were impounded by the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s traffic officers in a week long operation that took place in three regions of the province.

As part of the department’s traffic law enforcement activities. Roadblocks and rest stops were staged in different routes of the province between 11 and 17 February 2013.

140 vehicles were also discontinued and 11 drivers arrested for different violations which include drunken driving, excessive speeding and driving without necessary documents.

One driver on the N4 road in Machadodorp was arrested for driving at 126km/h at an 80km/h Zone.

MEC Vusi Shongwe praises the traffic officers saying that these operations will be the order of the day and will continue to be intensified throughout the year in all regions to ensure a road accident free Mpumalanga.

He calls on community members not to turn a blind eye when they experience reckless driving, but to report it to law enforcers.

“We need to work harder to eliminate the scourge of road carnage in order to restore communities’ faith in law enforcement agencies. We cannot succeed on our own; we need communities to work with us by among others reporting bad drivers and spread road safety messages.

“Road users are warned to obey traffic regulations on our roads to ensure that there is a     reduction of accidents in the province,” said Shongwe
