Highveld secondary school wins provincial PET competitiions

21 November 2011

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has awarded the Highveld Secondary School to represent the province nationally for the participatory educational techniques [PET].

The PET is meant to instil road safety education to learners through researching and presentation on road safety challenges and solutions.

Six schools from different regions of the province participated against each other and Highveld Secondary School from Elukwatini came first.

In the competition, the six different schools made models demonstrating factors that cause road accidents and the solutions to the challenges. The schools also made verbal presentations.

Speaking at the competition was Head of Department, Mr Thulani Sibuyi who said that schools are a significant platform for instilling road safety.

“The youth is our future and to make sure that we save our future from the scourge of road carnages, we must ensure that our youth do what is right and respect the rules of the road,” said Sibuyi.

Meanwhile, a grade 11 learner from the Highveld Secondary School team, Mandisi Mavimbela said that government still have a lot of work to improve engineering in townships.

He said that most accidents that they experience occur in townships where there are no road signs and drivers drive anyhow.

“Other roads in townships do not even have road markings and it leads to drivers driving recklessly on any side of the road they feel like driving. Some drivers are negligent and in a case where there are schools nearby a busy road, accidents are most likely to occur,” said Mavimbela.

Mavimbela added that government must go an extra mile to educate road users and arrest those who break the law.

He said that he support the call that driving lessons be taken to schools, saying that it will give young road users enough time to learn how to drive before they start driving.
