Standerton BMW drunk driver granted bail

22 July 2013

The driver of a BMW sedan who ran over a traffic officer over the weekend has been granted a R2000 bail following his appearance at Standerton Magistrate Court today, 22 June 2013

The 41 year old driver, Mduduzi Nkosi, has been charged with attempted murder, reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving an unroadworthy vehicle, resisting arrest and failure to comply with directions given by a traffic officer. The case has been remanded to 23 August 2013.

Nkosi ran over the traffic official on Friday, 19 August 2013 following his failure to stop when instructed by the officer. He subsequently knocked down the officer who sustained serious injuries that led to him being airlifted to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.

Nkosi did not stop after the accident and was immediately pursued by another officer who immediately brought him to the scene. He later fought with with the officer who was arresting him at the time. The officer sustained minor injuries and was treated and released the same night.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe said he believed the charges brought against Nkosi would send a strong message to other motorists that they must either comply with traffic regulations or face fire.

Shongwe says he believes that the criminal justice processes will ensure that the culprit receives maximum sanctions.

”Road accidents do not only cost human lives but the country loses millions of rands in dealing with its consequences. Innsurance industries are also severely affected by the resultant claims, therefore it is critical that we rid our roads of dangerous and reckless drivers,” the MEC said.

Meanwhile, Shongwe will visit the injured traffic official at Milpark Hospital on Tuesday, 23 July 2013
