Mpumalanga to have own traffic training college

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe announced that a Traffic Training College will be built at Calcutta in Bushbuckridge so that traffic officers could be trained in the province in the future.
Shongwe said that the existence of the college would assist the province to save money in the long term because once it is functional, traffic management trainees will not be sent outside the province.
With regards to the establishment of the Traffic College, the
department has set aside a budget of 20 million for the design, geo tech and
environmental impact analysis in current financial year.
Shongwe said that the college will benefit the local community both in terms of temporal employment during the construction phase and permanent employment when the college is functional.
The MEC also announced that in line with the Global Decade of Action
for Road Safety (2011-2020) the Department will review the current Provincial
road Safety Strategy (2006 – 2010) to ensure a holistic approach to road safety.
He said that in the current financial year the department will pilot the early childhood road safety interventions at identified pre-schools.
The MEC said that the initiative was in line with the Global Decade of
Action for Road Safety (2011-2020) of which one of its pillars are early
childhood road safety interventions.
Shongwe also applauded the contribution by Malelane TSB to partner the
department in establishing an Advanced Junior Traffic Training Centre (JTTC) at
Nkomazi Local Municipality (Tonga).
As part of dealing with corruption at licensing centres in the province, the department will install two new Computerized Learners License Testing Systems in Emalahleni (Witbank) and Lekwa (Standerton) Licensing Centres.
He added that the department will further install four queuing systems
at Emalahleni (Witbank), Lekwa (Standerton), Thembisile Hani (KwaMhlanga) and
Bushbuckridge (Mapulaneng). This will assist with improving efficiency at
licensing stations whilst minimizing fraud and corruption.
The R803 704 000 budget for the department for the financial year 2012/2013 has been allocated as follows:
- Programme 1: Administration: R79 406 000
- Programme 2: Civilian Oversight: R10 139 000
- Programme 3: Crime Prevention and Community
Police Relations: R39 067 000.
- Programme 4: Transport Regulations: R328 286 000.
- Programme 5: Security Management: R346 806 000.
