Police Reservists call for MEC Shongwe to intervene on employment processes

26 April 2013

Mpumalanga Police Reservists have today [26 April 2013] called on Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Mr Vusi Shongwe to launch an investigation into the recruitment of police officers in the province.

The reservists made the call during an organised march to hand over a memorandum of their concerns to the MEC.

Among others, they complained that they were not considered for permanent employment regardless of the years that they spent as Reservists.

“We have served SAPS with loyalty and integrity, but do not feel that there is reciprocal appreciation to us,” said one of the Reservists.

MEC Shongwe told the Reservists that the department fully appreciates their efforts and commitment in the fight against crime and therefore will ensure that the matter gets the attention of the Provincial Commissioner, National Commissioner and the National Minister of Police.

“These young men and women have played a significant role in the reduction of crime in our province therefore their concerns should be prioritized,” said the MEC.

As per the Reservists expectations, the MEC ensured that a response will be communicated to them within the 14 days of the receipt of the memorandum.
