Piet Retief CPF wants people who withdraw cases to be arrested

27 February 2012

Piet Retief Community Police Forum (CPF) has told the department that they want people who withdraw cases to be arrested as it increases domestic violence.

The CPF said that the arrests could send a strong message to victims of domestic violence not to protect perpetrators of violence in their homes.

Speaking on behalf of the CPF in Mangosuthu Township in Piet Retief on February 26 during a Contact Crime Sector Outreach programme coordinated by the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Milton Lushaba said that perpetrators continued to abuse women and children because victims withdrew cases.

He said that women must stop protecting their husbands and relatives who violated them or sexually abuse their children in return for financial support.

“We plead that such women be arrested as they are too perpetrators of this violence,” said Lushaba.

Speaking in the same event was Piet Retief Police Station Commissioner Colonel Winnie Mavuso who said that Piet Retief was one of the problematic areas where there is high rate of domestic violence cases.

She encouraged women to report any violence that occur in their households to expose perpetrators and end domestic violence.

Departmental representative, Mr Sipho Khuzwayo urged parents to look after their children to avoid rape cases.

He said that in a situation when they know a suspect, they should not take law into their own hands but call the police. He further said that they should be careful when apprehending a suspect as they always carry dangerous weapons.

Meanwhile, the community complained that the police station in Piet Retief is far hence they needed a satellite police station in Mangosuthu.

They added that they will not stop taking the law into their own hands as criminals get arrested and released in a short space of time and continue harassing innocent people.
