Ten lives claimed by two separate accidents in Mpumalanga

Ten people lost their lives in two major accidents that happened in Mpumalanga between Friday and Sunday.

Five people died on Friday (26 July 2013) at about 23h40 when a Volkswagen Polo sedan and Toyota Tazz sedan collided head-on on D2296 road between Kamagugu and Karino Estates near Nelspruit. Three of the deceased were occupants of a Tazz sedan while another two were occupants in a Polo sedan. One person was seriously injured and was rushed to a hospital. The police are investigating cases of culpable homicide.

In another accident five people died when a BMW sedan collided with a Corsa Light Delivery vehicle (LDV) on R573 Moloto Road between Kwaggafontein and Moteti. The driver of a Corsa LDV lost controls afterwards and collided with another Ford LDV which overturned upon impact. Three of the deceased were occupants of a Mazda LDV while another two of the deceased were in a Corsa LDV.

Five people who sustained serious injuries were rushed to KwaMhlanga Hospital. The dead include a Mazda LDV driver, a four year old child and a pregnant woman. Two occupants of a BMW sedan including the driver sustained slight injuries. The police are investigating cases of culpable homicide and drunk driving against the BMW driver.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has called on motorists to exercise more vigilance on the road in order to avoid accidents. He has also called on members of the public to assist government by reporting any reckless or negligent driving on the road so that more lives are saved. He said more safe driving habits should be adopted by all motorists in order to curb accidents. 

The MEC has sent his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and is also wishing those who were injured a speedy recovery.
