In a road block that took place on July 27, 2012 at 3:45 am in the province around Nkomazi area, 26 vehicles were taken off the road by traffic officers.

The main target of the road block was to check the road worthiness and permits of trucks that transport farm workers which were recently seen as a threat after 24 people died and over 25 were injured in an accident between a truck and a train in the Nkomazi area.

Traffic officers from the province and Nkomazi Municipality were deployed in different routes of the area namely; R570, D797 and R571 where a large number of farm workers are transported on daily basis.

In three hours of the operation, over 500 vehicles were stopped and screened and 105 notices for violation were issued.

22 of the vehicles that were impounded were a bus, LDV’s and trucks which are transporting farm workers did not have permits and some not road worthy.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe praised the officers saying that many lives have been saved as the impounded vehicles could have been involved in an accident.

“People must refrain from wanting to make money and forgetting about the lives of the disadvantaged people. This operation will not be the last, we want to ensure that accidents of that nature do not occur again,” said Shongwe.
