422 vehicles impounded in Mpumalanga roads
30 July 2013
At least 422 vehicles were impounded in Mpumalanga
roads by Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison traffic
officers between 22 and 28 July 2013 during normal day to day operations.
The vehicles include light motor vehicles, busses,
mini busses, light delivery vehicles and heavy motor vehicles.
MEC Vusi Shongwe says the battle against lawlessness
and un-roadworthy vehicles will eventually be won.
“These vehicles which are not road worthy are contributors to road accidents and we must remove all of them from our roads,” said Shongwe.
During the operations, 142 vehicles were
also discontinued and 4544 fines were issued to drivers for different
traffic violations including among others speeding, disobeying traffic rules
and un-roadworthy vehicles.
28 drivers were also arrested for drunken driving,
excessive speed, overloading, reckless and negligent driving.
The MEC praised the traffic officers for making the
arrests saying it must be the order of the day to send a strong message that
negligence will not be tolerated.
He said that this will go a long way to curb fatal
accidents that happen on weekends which are a result of speed, drunk driving
and negligence.
