Department of Co-operative Governance and
Traditional Affairs embarks on a programme to drill and rehabilitate boreholes
18 August 2009
The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional
Affairs has embarked on an extensive programme to drill and rehabilitate 56
boreholes in 52 villages throughout the province as an immediate intervention.
The aim of the programme is to provide temporary means for supply of water to communities without access to safe water, provide a safe facility for the provision of safe and hygienic water and to concentrate on rural households without access to safe water. The areas that have been given priority are all areas in the province without infrastructure, destitute families and poverty pockets of the province.
The identified villages were obtained from a very
extensive process of consulting municipalities and community leaders to provide
information on areas without water. After extensive consideration and due to
limited resources, priority was given to 56 boreholes.
An amount of R10 million has been budgeted for this
immediate intervention. Due to limited funds the department has not been able to
address all the water requirements in all areas. The department is engaging
other stakeholders to fund additional boreholes.
The boreholes form part of the provinces “100 days”
projects. It is envisaged that the boreholes will be completed in early
September 2009.
The department would like to request all affected
communities to co-operate with the contractors who are working on the projects
in their areas.
