Nkangala District Municipality consists of 160 towns and villages. The District shares the western side of its borders with the economic hub of South Africa, Gauteng. In meeting the eight Millennium Development Goals, which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, by 2015. The District is driven by the consensus ‘business unusual’.
District’s economy is dominated by electricity, manufacturing and mining. These sectors are followed by community services, trade, finance, transport, agriculture and construction. The relatively large economies of Steve Tshwete (Middelburg) and Emalahleni (Witbank) sustain the economy of the Nkangala District to a large ex tent and are based on the steel industry with high reliance on the manufacturing sector.
