Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Bushbuckridge learners go to prison

20 August 2014

Barberton Correctional facilities will host 240 learners from four secondary schools around Bushbuckridge next Tuesday. The exercise is aimed at exposing learners to frightening yet real experiences of life behind bars. The learners will also be provided with an opportunity to interact with prison officials who will take them through parts of the prison facilities.

During the visits learners will also be encouraged not to embrace criminality but rather focus on pursuing positive lifestyles so that they could also not lend behind bars. The programme, which is part of the Mpumalanga Government’s integrated School Safety Strategy, will also enable inmates to share their stories with the learners. The exercise is further intended to reign in on learner behavioural problems experienced at certain schools.

The programme, which be led by Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe, will be among others supported by the departments of Education, Correctional Services, SAPS and Moral Regeneration Movement.
