Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Social Development Pioneers to be honoured

25 August 2014

Eradication of gender based violence, economic empowerment and social development will be high on the agenda during the 2014 Women’s Day celebration scheduled to take place on August 30, 2014 at Masoyi stadium in Mbombela Local Municipality, Ehlanzeni district. Over 70 women who have made significant contribution to social development in the province will be awarded for the role they have played in uplifting the society in areas including health, economic development and education amongst others.

Women pioneering social and economic development across the province will be honoured during the celebration, amongst them is Ms Ester Nkosi Founder Ester’s Haven, a shelter for orphaned and vulnerable children in the Msholozi informal settlement. The shelter cares for the basic needs of neglected, abused and poverty stricken children of all races some as young as 3 months old.

Themed “celebrating the 60th anniversary of the women’s charter and 20 years of freedom: together moving a non-racial, non-sexist South Africa forward,” the celebration is also aimed at addressing access to social services, education and economic opportunities for all women in the province and also rally communities and all stakeholders.

“Our aim as provincial government is to impact the lives of women from all walks of life through a variety of programmes that will not only commemorate, celebrate and connect women with the stories of their past but will also open up opportunities for a better future whilst advancing their course towards socioeconomic empowerment. We also reflect on the strides that we, as a government have made towards ensuring that 60 years on, an environment that enables women to take charge of their lives is created and sustained and that our women are emancipated from all forms of socioeconomic struggles including gender oppression, patriarchy, sexism, racism, and structural oppression,” said MEC for Culture, Sport & Recreation, Ms Norah Mahlangu Mabena whose department is tasked with coordinating the event.

The celebration will commence with a Women’s march against Gender based violence and will start at Mshadza High School at 08h00 on the morning of the event. Premier David Mabuza will deliver a keynote address and patrons can look forward to motivational talks and performances by artists such as Clash of the Choirs. Departments will render services.
