Premier’s Disability Achiever Awards

The Office on the Status of Disabled Persons (OSDP) in the Office of the Premier in partnership with Disabled People’s Organisation will host the ninth annual Premier’s disability achiever awards on 26 March 2009. The function will start at 8h00, Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, Thusong Service Centre in Middleburg.
The purpose of the awards is to honour and recognise excellent achievement by persons with disabilities, professionals and individuals in terms of addressing issues of disabilities. The awards are also aimed at raising awareness on the capabilities and abilities of persons with disabilities and upliftment of fellow disabled persons and communities.
Awards will be presented in the following categories:
Best disability activist
This category recognises persons with or without disabilities, who have championed the rights of the persons with disabilities through advocacy and community initiatives or projects.
Best community builder with disability
This category recognises persons with disabilities, who have through their community initiatives or projects achieved in the improvement of the quality of lives of people with disabilities or non disabled persons.
Best learner with disability
This category recognises primary and secondary learners with disabilities, who actively participate in school activities and programmes.
Best social worker
This category recognises social workers, who have performed excellently in the improvement of the quality of lives of persons with disabilities and upholding to the Batho Pele principles.
Best rehabilitation worker and institution
This category includes therapists, orthotists / prosthetists and rehabilitation assistants who are best performing in their area of work and treating persons with disabilities with dignity and respect.
Best school and educator
This category recognises educators who have excelled in implementing and displaying good practice of inclusive education in their schools, breaking down barriers to learning for learners with disabilities.
Best sportsperson with disability
This category recognises sportspersons with disabilities who have participated in sport development programmes or initiated sport development programmes for the benefit of the persons with disabilities and excelled nationally and internationally in sport.
Best woman with disability
This category recognises women with disabilities who have performed and excelled beyond their disabilities barriers and initiated projects in communities to benefit other community members with or without disabilities.
Best manager
This category recognises managers or employers in the public or private sector, who have succeeded in creating employment opportunities, reasonable accommodation and increased access to service opportunities for persons with disabilities in their organisation.
Best local municipality in mainstreaming disabilities
This category recognises local municipalities which have succeeded in integrating or mainstreaming needs for persons with disabilities in their systems of work, services, programmes and projects.
Best provincial department in mainstreaming disabilities
This category recognises provincial departments which have succeeded in integrating or mainstreaming needs for persons with disabilities in their systems of work, services, programmes and projects.
