Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Mpumalanga District Memorial Services Receives Overwhelming Attendance

12 December 2013

Mpumalanga Provincial Government is humbled by the overwhelming attendance seen at the District Memorial services in the province to pay deserving tribute to the late Former State President Nelson Mandela. The people of Mpumalanga has really done justice to the mourning period and have acknowledged and welcomed the decision by the leadership to bring the memorial services to the people in the districts.

Mpumalanga has recorded maximum attendance in all the venues where people gathered with respect and dignity in paying their last respects to the world greatest statesman. About 8000 people attended the memorial service in Steve Tshwete local municipality. Meanwhile the attendance in Msukaligwa local municipality (Ermelo) exceeded 18 000 people in attendance.

Provincial government took a decision to reach out and accommodate all citizens by hosting the memorial services closer to the people.

The planned provincial night vigil gathering has been called off, due to the prediction of heavy rains on Saturday night that might have an impact on attendance but also the fact that the live screening will not cover the entire state funeral on Sunday.

Government wishes to thank the people of Mpumalanga for having honoured Madiba in a revolutionary and respectable manner. The massive support from the stakeholders and in particular the African National Congress yielded positive and outstanding results. Indeed the province mourned the loss and celebrated the life of the Icon and the father of the nation.
