Mkhondo Local Municipality put under administration
30 June 2009
The Department of Co-operative Governance
and Traditional Affairs has assumed responsibility of the Mkhondo Local
municipality in terms of Section 139 (1)(b) of the Constitution of the Republic
of South Africa, 1996 (Act No.108 of 1996). The decision by the Department is
subject to rectification by the Executive Council
The decision by the Department follows
numerous events of unrest in the municipality. The unrest has been as a result
of protests organized by the community, where the community has made a number of
allegations against the municipality. Some of these allegations include
misappropriation of funds, lack of service delivery, nepotism, poor
implementation of the Integrated Development Plan and lack of proper
consultation in terms of resource distribution and infrastructure.
The above-mentioned allegations indicate a
series of critical challenges facing the municipality, which have affected its
ability to function properly.
The MEC for Co-operative Governance and
Traditional Affairs Mr Norman Mokoena will appoint an Administrator to
investigate the allegations and run the municipality. As of today the Department
will assume full responsibility of the municipality. The administrator will
begin his work immediately.
The department would like to request all
stakeholders to fully support the Administrator.
MEC Mokoena would also like to convey his
sincerest condolences to the families, relatives and friends of those who lost
their lives and wishes a speedy recovery to those who were injured during the
unrest.
