Mandela Day - 18 July

Mandela Day celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an imprint.

On this day, we raise our hands in celebration and renewed commitment to the making of a just society. Nelson Mandela teaches us that every human being can make a positive imprint. One by one, and together, we must continue to encourage open dialogue around social issues. We must transform discourse into action. We have work to do.

“An international campaign has been initiated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and related organisations, called Mandela Day, which sums up what Tata stands for.
Mandela Day will be celebrated on the 18th of July each year. It will give people in South Africa and all over the world the opportunity to do something good to help others.
Madiba was politically active for 67 years, and on Mandela Day people all over the world, in the workplace, at home and in schools, will be called upon to spend at least 67 minutes of their time doing something useful within their communities, especially among the less fortunate.
Let us wholeheartedly support Mandela Day and encourage the world to join us in this wonderful campaign.”
President Zuma, State of the Nation Address, 3 June 2009

An international campaign has been initiated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and related organizations, called Mandela Day, which sums up what Tata stands for.

In an effort to celebrate the legacy of South Africa’s former President Nelson Mandela, 46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation are urging people all over the world to join them in a bid to create an official Mandela Day, which would be held on Mr Mandela’s birthday each year, July 18.

Mandela Day is an annual celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and a global call to action for people to recognize their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.

“We would be honoured if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace and reconciliation,” according to a statement issued on Mr Mandela’s behalf.

A global movement for positive change begins with small actions. MandelaDay.com was created to inspire people to embrace Mr Mandela's values and make an imprint through service to their communities. We hope to empower people to find opportunities that address social issues such as:

This could mean any number of volunteer activities in your community, including, feeding the homeless, being a big brother/big sister, or visiting someone who is sick.
We urge you to stay involved year-round.

Mandela has lived and built his legacy by following his ten life skills. Finding your passion, purpose and meaning in life. Being able to laugh at yourself is very important.

Organising your thoughts. Being able to introspect and reflect on your thoughts and actions. Realising that time is a precious and valuable resource that is not renewable.

Always believing the very best of every person until proven wrong. The ability to make a painful experience meaningful. Listening before you speak and taking responsibility for your mistakes. It takes an army to liberate a country but only you can liberate yourself. It’s crucial to think carefully about the choices you make because it can determine whether you liberate or enslave yourself.

Mr. Mandela has spent 67 years making the world a better place.
We’re asking you for 67 minutes.
