BALFOUR TO HOST MPUMALANGA PROVINCIAL FREEDOM DAY CELEBRATION

26 April 2021

Mpumalanga will mark Freedom Day in Balfour in Dipaleseng Local Municipality on Tuesday, April 27 starting at 10:00.

Freedom Day commemorates the first democratic elections of 1994 in which all South Africans aged 18 years and older, regardless of race, could vote. This year is the 27th anniversary of that historic day and it is celebrated under the theme, ”The Year Of Charlotte Maxeke: The Meaning Of Freedom Under Covid-19.”

The theme honours the life and times of struggle icon, Charlotte Maxeke. This year is the 150th Birth Anniversary of the struggle icon. Maxeke and her peers laid a foundation on which the country’s democracy was founded on.

According to the department’s Sibongile Nkosi, the provincial celebration is held in Balfour to show that the Mpumalanga Provincial Government events benefit all the people of the province. “The provincial government will come with a basket of services to ensure that government leaves a lasting legacy in the community of Balfour. Government will handover Balfour Public Library as well as sport attire and equipment."

Mpumalanga Premier, Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane and other members of the executive, including MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation, Thandi Shongwe will grace the event. Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane will deliver the keynote address.
