PREMIER MTSHWENI-TSIPANE’S CONDOLENCES TO THE BEREAVED FAMILY OF EMALAHLENI EXECUTIVE MAYOR, CLLR MALATJIE

03 January 2022

Mpumalanga Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane has sent condolences to the bereaved family of Emalahleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr. Linah Malatjie. This follows the untimely passing of Cllr Malatjie and her husband in a car accident in the early hours of Monday morning.

In her condolences, Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane says the Provincial Government is devastated by the news of Malatjie’s passing. “We are still reeling in shock over the sad news of the Executive Mayor’s passing. Her passing has robbed not only her family of a mother, but the Municipality and the entire Mpumalanga Province, of a leader with a wealth of experience in Local Government.”, the Premier said.

Cllr Malatjie’s experience in Local Government included serving as a Municipal Manager and later as Executive Mayor of the Nkangala District Municipality, before her election as Executive Mayor for Emalahleni Municipality.

Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane lamented Malatjie’s passing at the time when the country is mourning the passing of former Anglican Bishop, Desmond Tutu. She remembers Cllr Malatjie as one of her mentors in the political arena in Emalahleni. She says the late Executive Mayor, possessed impeccable leadership qualities and an unwavering passion for youth and community development. “She has always been supportive to the youth. She championed the rights of the youth to be educated, and lobbied the private sector relentlessly to award bursaries to young people in Emalahleni. May her soul rest in peace,” the Premier said.

The Premier will lead a delegation of the Provincial Executive Council in a visit to the bereaved family later today. Details of the visit are as follows:

Date: Monday, 03 January 2022
Venue: Emalahleni
Time: 13h00

All COVID-19 protocols will be adhered to during the visit.

The media is invited.
