MPUMALANGA PREMIER’S EASTER HOLIDAY MESSAGE

As the country joins the world to celebrate the easter holidays, Mpumalanga Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane urges road users to drive safe and to give tourists an unprecedented hospitality in the province. South Africa marks the Friday to Monday period as easter holidays, with Christians celebrating Good Friday.

Mtshweni-Tsipane says adherence to traffic rules and patience will guarantee motorists and all other road users, a safe destination during this period. “This period is often associated with road fatalities. Driving at high speed, the use of unworthy vehicles and impatience, are among the contributing factors. We implore all road users to drive carefully to prevent accidents and loss of lives,” pleaded the Premier. She says a zero-tolerance towards traffic offenders by traffic authorities is the solution to roads fatalities.

Mpumalanga is one of the provinces popular for exotic tourist sites in the country. With the relaxation of lockdown restrictions, it is envisaged that the number of holiday makers will swell accommodation facilities in areas popular for tourists, such as God’s Window and Graskop Gorge in Graskop and the Kruger National Park. Mtshweni-Tsipane says the easter holidays is an opportunity for tourism operators and citizens to exploit the easter holidays into growing the tourism sector. “As we welcome visitors to the province’s exotic natural sites, we also urge our citizens to play their part as hospitable hosts during these holidays. In this way, we will all contribute towards their decisions of making Mpumalanga their number one holiday destination. Their visits will have a snowball effect for the recovery of our economy, amid the COVID-19 pandemic”, the Premier stated.

The Premier urged all citizens to report cases of GBVF in an attempt to intensify the fight against the scourge. “We are gradually winning the fight against GBVF, and the easter holidays are crucial for all of us to be on high alert against the perpetrators. Any hesitancy will give them a false sense of impunity” she warned.
