CONVICTION OF SERIAL MURDERER A CORNERSTONE OF GBVF-FIGHT IN MPUMALANGA

14 November 2022

The conviction of a serial rapist and murderer, Nhlanhla Mlotshwa by the High Court in Middleburg is viewed as a cornerstone in the fight against Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in Mpumalanga. Mlotshwa was sentenced to four (4) life sentences and 18 years in prison. His brutal rape and murder spree, left his three victims, Sibongile Msibi, Mbali Nkosi and Happiness Thela, dead.

This week marks the second, since Mlotshwa began his imprisonment. Mpumalanga Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane says Mlotshwa’s conviction, provides a concrete evidence about the justice system’s intolerance of GBVF. “The decision to hand down Mlotshwa the harsh sentences, is an impetus to our fight against GBVF. It is timely as we are mobilizing all sectors of our society and resources, to ensure that blood-dripping rapists and murderers are locked up in jail, without reprieve,” the Premier emphasized.

The Premier says Mlotshwa was a disgrace and a threat to the youth and the genera public in Mkhondo Municipality where he lived and Mpumalanga as a whole. His brutality was extreme and as such, the conviction sends a clear signal to his ilk that they have no place in the society. “He committed these heinous crimes between 2021 and 2022, thereby perpetuating GBVF at the time when the war against the scourge is intensified,” she stated.

Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane commended the investigation, prosecution and judiciary teams for the ultimate sentence. She says the provincial government will continue to intensify the fight against GBVF, based on the outcomes of the recent Presidential GBVF summit, and to mobilize communities through public participation activities such as the launch of 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children. The event will take place on the 26th of November 2022 at Thandukukhanya Stadium, in Mkhondo Local Municipality.
