MPUMALANGA PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT TO COMMEMORATE WORLD AIDS DAY IN VICTOR KHANYE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY

30 November 2022

Preparations are at an advanced stage for the commemoration of World AIDS day in Mpumalanga. The annual commemoration, will be held on the 1st of December. It is observed under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Although the commemoration seeks to show solidarity for the global fight against HIV and AIDS, however, it also serves as a pathway towards the ultimate objective of ending AIDS by 2030. Mpumalanga is implementing vigorous measures aimed at reducing the spread and the impact of HIV/AIDS through, among them, advocating for people to go for testing, for them to know their status, and encourage them to be part of the ARV programme. Mpumalanga is the second province with a high prevalence of cases, after KwaZulu-Natal. In 2021, Mpumalanga had 15.9% cases after KwaZulu-Natal with 18.3%.

The commemoration serves as a platform to tackle the stigma, the prejudice and exclusion faced by people living with HIV. It will be attended by the leadership of the Provincial Government, community members, advocacy groups and the civil society.

The Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane will deliver the key note address. Details of the commemoration are as follows:

Date: 17 October 2022
Venue: Rob Ferreira Hospital, City of Mbombela Local Municipality
Time: 10h00

Members of the media are invited. For confirmation, contact Ms Sibongile Mkani-Mpolweni (Premier’s Spokesperson) on 071 557 1142 or Ms Sharon Nkosi (MEC’s Spokesperson) on 078 317 9518.
