MPUMALANGA IS READY TO HOST THE PRESTIGIOUS METRO FM MUSIC AWARDS

05 May 2023

It is all systems go as the Mpumalanga province hosts the prestigious Metro FM Music Awards (MMA) this weekend. The event is among the biggest to be hosted in the province since government’s watershed decision to allow hosting of events after the COVID-19 restrictions.

The awards ceremony is a culmination of a decisive decision, announced by the Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane in the State of the Province Address (SOPA) in February 2023, aimed at boosting both the tourism sector, the arts and creative industry, to restore their glory after the pandemic. “I am happy to announce that we have partnered with the SABC to host the prestigious Metro fm music awards, for the next three years, as part of our efforts to bolster tourism within the Province and heighten our focus on the arts and creative industry”, Mtshweni-Tsipane stated during the SOPA pronouncement.

The ceremony, to be attended by thousands of revelers across South Africa and the neighbouring states, such as Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini, will signify Mpumalanga’s capability to host major events. Mtshweni-Tsipane says visitors are destined for the best hospitality during their stay. “We pride ourselves as a province with a good track record of hosting successful events, based on the 2010 Soccer World Cup experience. In recent times, we hosted major events, which attracted dozens people, among them, the Cultural Experience and soccer matches. Such experience is a blueprint to guide the province in hosting the MMAs,” the Premier elaborated.

She emphasised security measures and the high commitment of tourism operators, as key to the successful hosting of the MMAs. “Our security agencies, led by the South African Police Services are on high alert, to keep revelers safe. The hotels and the bread and breakfast facilities, are committed to the highest standards of accommodation and catering services for the visitors. We will leave no stone unturned, to give our visitors a memorable hospitality in Mpumalanga,” Mtshweni-Tsipane expatiated.

Through the marketing of the Music Awards event, destination Mpumalanga has received much publicity which even led to accommodation establishments being fully booked over this weekend, with effect from today. MMAs will take place at the Mbombela Stadium in Mataffin, on Saturday, 6 May 2023, from 17h00. The winners, in various categories will be announced on Saturday, to mark the finale of the event.

Several build-up events took place during the week. These include Metro FM’s Live Outside Broadcasts in various areas of Mpumalanga and a music workshop at the Mbombela Civic centre. The music workshop was meant to empower upcoming and aspiring local musicians by transferring skills to them.
