MPUMALANGA PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT CONVENES A WORKSHOP TO ALIGN JUST ENERGY TRANSITION PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES

09 May 2023

A host of key stakeholders with a role to play in the Just Energy Transition (JET) will participate in a workshop convened by the Mpumalanga Provincial Government in Secunda. The workshop is among the measures pronounced by the Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane during the State of the Province Address (SOPA) in February 2023 to achieve the objectives of climate change, through a transition from the coal to the alternative forms of energy, such as solar and green energy.

The Premier’s emphasis was on diversity of local economies to reduce dependency on coal, and re-skilling and upskilling of the most vulnerable in the labour force, as well as supporting small businesses and co-operatives in local communities, to access emerging opportunities in the green economy sector.

Among the key stakeholders to attend the workshop are representatives of civil society, the private sector, organized labour, the world bank and academics. It seeks to achieve the following objectives, namely:

  • To take stock of ongoing and planned Just Transition (JT) related initiatives in the province;
  • To inform the preparation of an integrated, collaborative, just transition plan for the province, including preparation of a regional economic diversification and industrialization strategy for the province; and
  • To create a coordination and collaboration mechanism to facilitate synergy and streamline the efforts of various stakeholders.
Mpumalanga is regarded as the home of the power grid, based on the number of power stations that are established in the Province. As such, the Provincial Government is resolute in its commitment to ensure that it plays a crucial role in the country’s efforts to resolve challenges related to power supply.

The workshop is arranged as follows:

Date: 11-12 May 2023
Venue: Graceland Hotel, in Secunda
Time: 09:00

Media representatives are invited. For confirmation, contact Ms Phumla Mokoena (Office of the Premier) on 060 998 8781.
