PREMIER MTSHWENI-TSIPANE’S WARNING AGAINST ILL DISCIPLINE DURING CROSS OVER FESTIVITIES

31 December 2023

Mpumalanga Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane has urged communities in Mpumalanga to exercise caution during the festivities to mark the cross over to the New Year. Several festivies will be held across the Province on the eve of New Year, and the main function will take place at the Mbombela Stadium.

Mtshweni-Tsipane says emergency personnel are on high alert to save lives during emergency cases. However, the Premier says this should not encourage revelers to act carelessly and pick up injuries. “The paramedics are on high alert to save lives. We urge revelers attending the year-end festivities to behave in a responsible manner. The cross over events to 2024 should be conducted in a peaceful manner, with no fatalities. Parents must prevent their children from using fireworks, as they cause injuries,” She emphasised.

The Premier urged all sectors of the society to heighten the fight against the scourge of Gender-Based Violence (GBVF), during this period. She says the cross over festivities will be meaningless if women and children are exposed to inhuman treatment. “Let us all stop Gender-Based Violence and Femicide against women and children. We must eliminate GBVF by reporting such incidents to the local police for the perpetrators to be arrested,” the Premier declared.

Recently, Mpumalanga recorded massive rain in various areas, which caused slippery conditions on the road. Mtshweni-Tsipane says a multi-disciplinary approach of law enforcement agencies and traffic officials has been intensified to maintain traffic control and to arrest criminals. “In Mpumalanga, we have adopted a zero-tolerance approach for infringement of traffic rules. No drink and drive will be tolerated. Vehicles not worthy to be on the road, are being impounded, to reduce road accidents and fatalities. People with criminal records will be arrested in a quest to rid Mpumalanga of crime,” Mtshweni-Tsipane stressed.
