PREMIER NDLOVU URGES ROAD USERS TO ACT RESPONSIBLY TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS

23 December 2024

The festive period is marked by high traffic volumes on the road in Mpumalanga, as holiday makers travel to the province to spend Christmas and New year. The province is also a pathway for Mozambican citizens travelling from South Africa, to spend the holidays back at home.

As traffic volumes increase during the festive period, the Premier, Mr. Mandla Ndlovu appeals to all road users, especially motorists, to drive safe and prevent accidents. “Adherence to the traffic rules and regulations is not optional. We urge every road user to comply. We have dispatched multi-disciplinary teams of law enforcement urgencies to embark on aggressive operations on our roads, to deal with cases of infringement,” the Premier emphasised.

The Premier is satisfied that law enforcement agencies are stepping up enforcement measures on the roads. The outcome of these measures include, among others, the impounding of 600 vehicles, the arrest of 35 drivers for reckless driving and 24 for drunken driving.

Drunken driving, high speed and use of cell phone are cited as the common contributing factors for most accidents on the South African roads. “The law enforcement agencies are paying special attention to these contributing factors. The brief to them is that drunken driving, texting and speed, are outlawed, and that risks associated with them are too detrimental to be tolerated. So any infringement must never be tolerated,” the Premier elaborated.

Mr. Ndlovu has lamented the accident which claimed the lives of seven (7) people on the N3 toll road between Villiers and Heidelburg on Monday morning. He conveyed condolences to their families, and a speedy recovery for the two survivors.
