PREMIER NDLOVU TO LAUNCH THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM CAMPAIGN AT ELUKWATINI

24 November 2024

The Premier of Mpumalanga, Mr. Mandla Ndlovu will on Tuesday launch the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign. The campaign is aimed at creating awareness about Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), challenge discriminatory attitudes against the victims and call for improved laws and services to end the scourge against women and children. It takes place from 25 November to 10 December annually.

Elukwatini Police Station is listed among the thirty police stations in the province where crime cases are reported. The campaign aims to create an awareness about the negative impact of GBVF on women and children, and to rid society of abuse permanently.

This year’s campaign will be held under the theme: “30 Years of Advancing Collective Action to End Violence Against Women and Children”. It further emphasizes the need to address the root causes of GBVF, promoting positive masculinity, gender equity and creating economic opportunities for women and children.

Communities are urged to protect children from exposure to violence and harmful content on the internet and social media. As a mitigating factor, communities are expected to report the perpetrators and denounce cultural practices that perpetuate gender inequalities.

Last week, the Executive Council approved a Crime Prevention Strategy as one of the pillars to support the elimination of the GBVF scourge in the province. Build up events were also held, among them, a Men’s dialogue in Emalahleni Municipality.

The launch of the campaign is arranged as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 24 November 2024
Venue: Elukwatini Stadium, Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality
Time: 11:00

Members of the media are invited.
